CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Joseph watched Harry Byrd on the monitor inside the back of the recon vehicle. He wore earphones through which he received reports from the officers on the streets who were observing Harry and anyone else in the vicinity. Harry had been out there for over an hour, and so far, no one even vaguely resembling Lucas had been seen. Not that they expected anything to happen today. Lucas was unhinged but no fool. Even if he did manage to locate his brother, which was unlikely on his first trip out, it was doubtful that he would make a move immediately.

Joseph had received a message from Nikki, saying she was back at the station, so he decided to contact her with an update.

‘Nothing to report, as expected.’

‘Bored yet?’ asked Nikki.

‘Not yet, but it’ll come,’ he replied dryly.

‘And Harry? How is our human magnet shaping up as a lure?’

Joseph thought for a moment. ‘He’s either taken to it like a duck to water, or . . . or he’s so committed to finding his brother that he’s forgotten about us altogether. His every move is that of someone looking for a lost loved one. He’s observant and has an air of expectancy, tinged with desperate hope and a sort of sadness, as if he realises that his search could be fruitless.’

‘Blimey, Joseph! You can tell all that from a figure on a computer screen? That’s impressive! And I have to say, pretty deep.’

‘It’s not me, Nikki, it’s him. He’s a deep person and not one to underestimate. I’m certain Harry Byrd has his own agenda. I’m just hoping Cat and Ben can shine a bit more light on him.’

‘Me too. And his weird family.’ She paused. ‘Ring me back in ten, Joseph. I have to go. I’ve just seen Hackett come in.’

Joseph ended the call and returned to Harry Byrd. Now he was sitting on a memorial bench in the grounds of St Saviour’s Church, gazing across at the old yew trees, as if remembering when he and his little brother had played there as children, constructing their imaginary place. Joseph wished he could feel sorry for this lonely-looking man, but there were so many unanswered questions about him and what Nikki described as his weird family that it was hard to sympathise. The truth was, he wasn’t quite sure how he felt about Harry Byrd.

‘Sir?’ The IT technician sitting next to him pointed to another screen. ‘I’ve linked into a CCTV camera at the church, and we have a possible sighting! Look.’

Joseph spun around and stared in the direction the man was pointing. A slim figure, partially obscured by trees, was standing in the shadows and apparently watching Harry. Joseph grabbed his microphone and spoke to two of the officers on the street. ‘Jim! Karen! Inside St Saviour’s churchyard, one hundred metres from the main gate to the right, beneath a cluster of trees. Male suspect. Investigate and report please, and softly, softly!’

‘Damn it, he’s gone,’ cursed the IT operator. ‘And there isn’t another camera in that area, Sarge.
